Summary

A Junior Library Guild Selection

From the author of The Last Thing You Said, a YA romance about a girl on a boys hockey team who happens to fall for the team captain。

Holland Delviss wants to be known for her talent as a hockey player, not a hockey player who happens to be a girl。 But when her school team is selected to be one of the schools featured and televised as part of HockeyFest, her status as the only girl on the boys' team makes her the lead story。 Not everyone is thrilled with Holland's new fame, but there's one person who fiercely supports her, and it's the last person she expects: her bossy (and very cute) team captain, Wes。

Light on hockey, heavy on teen romance。 Though, the hockey energy is excellent and the love story was solid。 All in all an enjoyable read。

This book was。。。fine。 The romance moved too fast and came out of nowhere。 Holland hates Wes aggressively until he gets dressed up for a dance and then she is automatically obsessed with how hot he is。 She goes from 0-100 in like 2 seconds。 I also just really don't understand how she ended up on the boys hockey team when there is a girls team at the school。 That makes absolutely no sense。 I could see her being able to play on the guys team if there was no girls team, but all the drama she dealt w This book was。。。fine。 The romance moved too fast and came out of nowhere。 Holland hates Wes aggressively until he gets dressed up for a dance and then she is automatically obsessed with how hot he is。 She goes from 0-100 in like 2 seconds。 I also just really don't understand how she ended up on the boys hockey team when there is a girls team at the school。 That makes absolutely no sense。 I could see her being able to play on the guys team if there was no girls team, but all the drama she dealt with in the book was super preventable。 All of that just seemed silly to me。 I know the author was trying to make a feminist statement, but in doing so, she really did make it seem like girls teams are not as good or respected as boys teams。 This enemies to lovers story would have worked just as well if they had just been competitive captains of different teams。 Wish I could have liked this one better, but this is not a book I would pass on to my students。 。。。more

laughably one of the worst ya romances i’ve read。 i’ve seen dcoms handle the topic with more aptitude and engagement, gave me a good chuckle and put-down-the-book-head-in-hands- “this is so stupid” moments though。 jokes aside the terfy girl power displayed here is ugly and harmful and i can’t believe this book was written post 2013

Realistic portrayal of a heroine battling chauvinism in the sport she lovesA character sufficiently complex and flawed to be engaging and believable with some wise-cracking dialogue to keep me interested and invested in the story。

4。5 stars。 Happy to report that this was as good as I remembered! I love that Biren touches on all the nuances of playing on a boys' hockey team as a girl, and that there's a lil romance involved。 4。5 stars。 Happy to report that this was as good as I remembered! This was a fun book about a girl on a HS varsity Hockey Team。 Because I was in HS when Title 9 actually passed, I can totally relate。 Yes, I was on Boys Cross Country and Track, and not a contact sport, but I can still relate! I liked the story and the settings and the rich, complex characters。 A thoroughly enjoyable book。

Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren5/5I thought I loved her first book。。。this is a whole other ball game。Holland is such an amazing and dynamic character。 She is not simply the girl that plays hockey, but the journalist, the girlfriend, the best friend, the struggling teenager, and the woman。 The way that the sexism was portrayed and implicated in this book was realistically golden。 the encounters, to the comments to the harassment is not refreshingly honest but put in the spotlight。 I have no dou Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren5/5I thought I loved her first book。。。this is a whole other ball game。Holland is such an amazing and dynamic character。 She is not simply the girl that plays hockey, but the journalist, the girlfriend, the best friend, the struggling teenager, and the woman。 The way that the sexism was portrayed and implicated in this book was realistically golden。 the encounters, to the comments to the harassment is not refreshingly honest but put in the spotlight。 I have no doubt that women in sports live this especially surrounded by men。Sara Biren has marked my heart not only with character development and plots but with romance。 The slowburn was pure gold! This book included, enemies to lovers, slowburn, secret lovers ah, I need more! All around, I think Sara is underrated! She is two for two in my book and I am without a doubt going to re-read them! There is something about the plot and the writing (in this book the incorporated music playlists and in the other, the beautiful timeline divisions based off the months) that keeps me invested till the end。 I can't wait for her new book to be released in September! 。。。more

I picked this book up to fill my hockey/sports needs as I wait for the third installment of the Beartown series。 I saw “hockey” in the summary and decided to read it which was foolish of me BECAUSE it wasn’t an enjoyable read at all。 I think I got whiplash trying to keep track of Wes’ treatment of Holland。 There was no buildup at all in their relationship。 Where’s the tension?? The hockey montages?? All things considered, I can see how this would work for others, but it did nothing for me。 On to I picked this book up to fill my hockey/sports needs as I wait for the third installment of the Beartown series。 I saw “hockey” in the summary and decided to read it which was foolish of me BECAUSE it wasn’t an enjoyable read at all。 I think I got whiplash trying to keep track of Wes’ treatment of Holland。 There was no buildup at all in their relationship。 Where’s the tension?? Sometimes you just need some young love in your life and Cold Day in the Sun was just that。 It checked the box for every YA Romance cliche, in just the right way。 Plus, in a very sweet twist, we get to see main character, Dutch, finally figure out her own opinion of herself is what really matters。 Sports, young love, and fantastic world building make for one great read by Sara Biren。

If I’m being completely honest the beginning started off and sounded like fan fiction。 But, I’m glad I held out。 The ending was cute and empowering。 Beginning was a 2/5 ending was 4/5。

I rated this book 4 stars。 I really enjoyed the story and it keep me wanting to keep reading it till it was done。 I just had a few problems with this book。Idk if these count as spoiler, but I'm going to warn you just in case。(view spoiler)[1。 Holland hated Wes and all the sudden liked him。 It wasn't like he just joined the team this was his second year liking Holland and now all the sudden she likes him。 Its kinda wired。2。 I hate how sometimes she is sweet and nice and other times so snappy and I rated this book 4 stars。 I really enjoyed the story and it keep me wanting to keep reading it till it was done。 I just had a few problems with this book。Idk if these count as spoiler, but I'm going to warn you just in case。(view spoiler)[1。 Holland hated Wes and all the sudden liked him。 It wasn't like he just joined the team this was his second year liking Holland and now all the sudden she likes him。 Its kinda wired。2。 I hate how sometimes she is sweet and nice and other times so snappy and kinda aggressive, I feel like she is kinda bipolar。3。 The Ending。。。。。。 I hated it。 I just builds up to Hockeyfest and we don't even get to know if they win it, or go to state at all。 We don't get to know if she even ends up as captain ever。This all could have been fixed by having an epilogue。 She could have at a practice the next year being co-captain with wes or someone。4。 I don't even know how old anyone is。 I don't know how my senior there are, I'm assuming her brother is a senior, but next year will Holland and Wes be seniors。 Or will Holland be a senior and Wes be at collage Idk。 (hide spoiler)]Besides these problems that I had I really enjoyed this book。 。。。more

I liked it。 Cute YA story, with a clear message about feminism and misogony。 It was a little predictable, but again a good story。 I do like how this author, like Sarah Dessen, sets her novels in the same town setting。 You get to know the town, making the characters all that much more real。 It sets a precidence that this is a real place, a real story。。and you know what。。。it is, somewhere。 Dutch and Hot Sauce。

Manon

Cute contemporary read。
